I love learning. There I said it. I'm a proud geek who loves nothing more than learning something new. Yep, I was the girl at school who actually enjoyed having her head in a book rather than bunking off school to go to the park  to chain smoke and drink warm cider. In fact, if I had it my way I would spend my life learning new things - I could so see myself as a florist, Pilates instructor, or macrame professional.

However, there are some things education just can't teach you. Things like independence, compassion, understanding, appreciation, self-confidence, budgeting…. the list is endless. There’s so much you can learn from travelling that you simply can't get elsewhere which is why I truly believe travelling enriches your life.

Here's why I believe you should travel as often as you can.

It makes you broader minded

As someone who grew up in a village and went to a primary school with a max of 12 kids in the year I met the same kinds of people. Those, who I suppose, were just like myself. All English, all white, all had a mum and dad at home (complete with dog) and were all born in the same area. I guess you could say I grew up in a little countryside bubble where there really wasn't much diversity.

It was only when I moved to Dubai and started working for a big international company that I was suddenly surrounded with people from every corner of the world - South Africa, Germany, France, America, The Philippines and so on. From a girl who really only ever met one 'type' of person suddenly I was introduced to new faces along with new stories and perspectives belonging to people from every walk of life.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
― Mark Twain

Even though I've since moved back to Hampshire I will always look at my 3 years in Dubai as the most formative years of my life. Stepping away from everything I knew completely changed the way I thought about absolutely everything. We're so used to hearing racist and bigoted comments in the newspapers these days that sadly many people jump on the hate bandwagon, mainly due to ignorance from not having experienced anything different themselves. Travel really does make you question whether everything you see or read in the news is actually true. After all how can you have an opinion about something unless you've experienced it first hand for yourself? New experiences with new people help to educate and broaden a person, and therefore the more hate and fear in the world, the more necessary traveling becomes.

Travel shakes things up

Life can sometimes feel a little stagnant. Even if you're determined, like myself, never to live a life of routine sometimes life becomes just that - routine. Waking up at the same time, working 9-5, going to the gym after work, cooking dinner, going to bed, waking up and repeating. Suddenly you can feel like you're stuck in a rut which is why booking a trip away can be the perfect solution. It does you the world of good to have new experiences, see new things, meet new people, and even get a little bit homesick. Travel has an amazing way of shaking up your life as you know it.

It makes you want more

The truth is unless you travel it's hard to envision what the rest of the world is like. It is only when you swim in waterfalls, watch stunning sunsets, see monkeys swing from temples, stand in a volcano crater, and talk to complete strangers that you realise the world is so much bigger and much more beautiful than you ever imagined. I truly believe that if you don’t explore the world when you're younger, you have less desire to venture out when you are older and instead go down the usual stereotypical route of marriage, a mortgage, a 9-5 job, kids... That is all fine and I'm not here to tell you that there is anything wrong with wanting those huge milestones, but travel does make you want more. Whether that be taking your kids travelling with you, building a career you're passionate about, or marrying that person you're head over heels in love with even if everyone else says they're not right for you. Put simply the world isn't black and white anymore. Instead it is vivid, bright and full of endless possibilities.

For the stories

We all know that one person who does nothing but talk about their past experiences and adventures. And while you may roll your eyes in boredom remember it's better to be that person with a life full of experiences than the person who has nothing interesting to say. Travel means you get to take these experiences with you wherever you choose to go in life and also means you'll have a pretty awesome scrapbook of photos to look back on when you're old and grey. For me, I'm so so happy that I can look back in years to come and say I actually did it, I moved away from everything I knew and uprooted myself to experience something new. I now have many stories and memories that I'm immensely proud of. Remember your life, and the legacy you leave, will be as full or as empty as you make it.

To find yourself

Through the usual daily grind and the normality of everyday living it can be easy to lose yourself. To forget what it is you truly want out of live. Only once you remove yourself from the familiar can you find your truth. The places you explore and experience for the first time will open your eyes and awaken your soul. That rut you were stuck in at home will be well and truly banished giving a massive sense of release. Your different senses which have been laying dormant and stale from your everyday routine will be shaken up and given a new sense of life. New sights, smells and tastes will make you feel brand new again. Going away gives you the time, space and moments of solitude you need for self evaluation and exploration. For example, when I was living away (have I mentioned that already?) I realised that friends and family are the most important thing to me which is why I actually moved back from Dubai. So, in a round about way I needed to move away to discover what really mattered to me.

You may not grow old

Ok, so this point is a little morbid but one that definitely needs to be made.

How many times have you heard someone say how much they'd love to travel but they'll do it when they retire after they have the house, the kids, and the career. Travelling is often postponed with the intentions of ‘becoming a responsible adult’. That's all well in theory but believe it or not you're not guaranteed old age. Yes, that may seem morbid but I've known a few people who have only been retired a matter of months (with every intention of seeing the world) and suddenly they've passed away. If you have a burning desire to see a certain place or country then I'd urge you to go. You don't know what the future holds so live for the now, not the future.

Do you love to travel? Do you agree and think it makes you a more rounded person? Would you like to do more travelling in the future or are you much more of a home bird? My bucket list is ever growing - guess I best check that lottery ticket...

Love, Becky x
